The two portraits that hang in Special Collections are of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. The exact history is not known, but legend has it that the paintings originally hung in the Commandant's office at the Augusta Arsenal and were inherited by the school. Prior to their relocation to the Reese Library, these paintings hung in the office of the President of the university. The artist is unknown.
